Utakoi – 02

No pic ‘cuz I’m feeling lazy.

Quattro edit: Just a note… We’re not speedsubbing this, so don’t expect fast releases. This gets done when it gets done, but it WILL get done. Episodes 3-5 are being worked on.

Thank you very much for picking this show for subbing :D

I loved your translations on the first episode especially the poem interpretations. Only thing is if the -dono and -sama were used atleast for this show it would look more appropriate.

Thank you once agan. Gonna leech your releases for this show.

Honorifics in script are never gonna happen. Besides, you can still hear them say it. And if you can’t pick it out of the dialogue, well, you probably don’t know what they mean anyway.

      • asckj1 says:

Ofcourse I can hear them say it since I am not deaf XD. And I am not japanese so yeah maybe I dont completely understand them but I do know that honorifics such as -sama and -dono are used to address people with utmost respect (ofcourse the word Honor-ifics say that clearly). And not knowing too much about them does not mean I am forbidden to even speak up about it.

Well, since this anime is themed on tales from ancient Japan, when honorifics were used much more than they are probably used today, I just thought of mentioning this here. I have watched the CR subs of this show and they do use those honorofics explicitly. That helps somewhat in understanding the way the characters are addressed and the honor they are showing each other when such honorific are used in converstaions. However I have no complaints with your releases and I am not forcing or going to bug you in future as well for using them lol. I loved reading your poem translations in the show. They were beautiful!

          Told like a true weaboo

Leaving in Japanese words does not help to understand that. Localizing them does.

        • AsuraE says:

I originally didn’t mean anything but a simple explanation but this is too much not to touch.
          >I can hear them say it
          >I do know that honorifics such as -sama and -dono are used to address people with utmost respect
          >That [honorifics in the script] helps somewhat in understanding the way the characters are addressed and the honor they are showing each other when such honorific are used in converstaions.

So you can hear the honorifics and understand their meanings without them being in the subs, yet still want them in the subs because somehow having them in portrays the meaning more, despite the fact that with or without them in the subs your understanding of their meaning is solely reliant on your own knowledge (since you can clearly hear them in the dialogue)?

Just had to say this because 1) It’s the logic of people who say “u guiz suk hary chestballs coz u dont liek put honorics in ur subs”, so you might want to avoid saying it in the future and 2) In this situation putting in honorifics only serves to confuse people who don’t know what they mean. Localising is the best option and just dropping them completely off offers no advantages over having them in.

          Also, WALL OF TEXT :>

Okay. I understand your reason now. And again I didn’t mean anything that I wrote as an offense :| Maybe I should put my words differently. And arse called me weaboo (had to search for what it meant) and that is a bit mean :|

I did not comment here to insult you guys because I very well know my place since I am just a leecher. I have been downloading your phi brain releases regularly too. And I am really thankful that you are subbing them and giving us leechers good quality translated anime. I have repeated said so too in each of my replies here and also said I did not have any complaints. How can I complain when I dont know the language, the translation or the encoding of video that goes with the releases? I just wanted to voice something I felt. But sadly with most fansub groups, when you try to just tell them what you felt, you always end up getting thrashed :| I wonder what great sin we leechers commit.

Oh well. I’ll apologise if I was being rude when i replied. And also I’ll stop posting my views after this.

Just wanted to pipe in on the whole localization thing, I don’t know when it was you guys changed gears but I absolutely love that you’ve done away with your old fansubbing values and have adopted a more liberal, localized approach. I actually look out for your subs now. You guys do great work :)
